How Smartie works: invite your customer, complete securely, then review and follow up.
Send a link from the agent desktop or a campaign. The customer confirms their details, accepts the terms and conditions, selects their bank and completes its secure sign-in and two-factor verification. They can also securely upload documents. Both agent and customer receive completion emails. The report appears in the agent desktop, and the customer receives a PDF covering up to 12 months of available banking history. Agents can review, edit, update, add notes and request more information to validate points with the customer.
Data & insights

See what Smartie reveals.

Smartie example report with nine numbered highlights for stability, savings, housing, debt, income, essential spending, flexible spending, disposable income and transaction details.

Current month and 3–12 month views across chequing, savings, loans and cards.

  1. Stability & payment timing

Stability Score, payroll detection, employer details, income frequency and payment dates help optimise a repayment or instalment date.

  2. Savings & assets

Capture self-declared savings, RRSPs and TFSAs alongside available linked account information.

  3. Household & housing

Total household income, housing status and housing costs support energy and housing benefit applications.

  4. Debt & repayment options

Capture debts, balances and repayments to assess repayment plans, settlements or insolvency options.

  5. All income captured

Capture salary, government benefits, gig and self-employed earnings, and family-assisted income to build a fuller picture of the customer’s income.

  6. Fixed / essential spending

Includes loan repayments, housing costs and basic living needs, such as groceries, utilities and essential transport.

  7. Flexible spending

Includes all discretionary spending, such as dining out, entertainment and non-essential shopping.

  8. Monthly disposable income

MDI shows the disposable cash remaining after income minus fixed and flexible spending. A negative amount highlights a shortfall.

  9. All transaction details

Review transactional data across chequing, savings, loans and cards for the current month and 3–12 month views. Download statements and validate classifications.

Agent tools: review, validate & act

Reclassify e-transfers, cash withdrawals or cheques as rent, bills or debt repayments. Review, edit, update, add notes, request more information and download reports. Escalate internally or refer to a third party with the customer's permission.

Data can be pulled into an existing CRM via a secure API, subject to scoping.

Illustrative report with fictional identifying details. History depends on available account data. Income classification may require validation. This example shows no payroll detected and no declared savings or debt; the highlights describe report capabilities.

Why Smartie

A current view of affordability — without the manual burden.

Financial capacity assessments can be costly to administer, while document fraud makes it harder to rely on information submitted manually by consumers.

Understand affordability

Up to 12 months of consented banking data.

Smartie uses AI to categorise income, essential expenditure, discretionary spending and debt exposure — crucially calculating monthly disposable income.

Make better decisions

Use the same financial picture across multiple outcomes.

Whether you need to lend, lease, insure, collect, advise or assess benefit eligibility, Smartie helps you make decisions based on what someone can realistically afford today.

Greater confidence. Reduced fraud risk. A more consistent, compliant affordability process.

Less time gathering information. More time finding the right resolution.

Built for key markets

Our founder

Built in Canada for Canadians. Informed by global best practice.

I’m Simon Howard, founder of Smartie. With more than 25 years in credit, collections, lending and open banking across the UK, Canada and Europe, I’ve seen first-hand how often people are treated as a credit score rather than a person.

Smartie was created to bring real understanding to financial conversations — using secure data and access to global best practice and consulting partners from the UK, Australia and Europe to help organisations support better outcomes for their customers.
